In Tender Friction, Alexander Koch brings classical painting together with the images of his own generation. On large, raw canvases, familiar compositions from art history meet anime, video games and streetwear, setting his figures in a dystopian present.

The title points to the tension at the heart of his work: between the classical art he grew up with and the digital culture around him, between careful drawing and fast, heavily textured paint. His figures are sketched on paper first, then take shape in the act of painting.
